Saints Philip and James the lesser, saint of the day may 3

Feast Day: May 3

Patron Saints of Uruguay

James, Son of Alphaeus: Nothing is known of this man except his name, and that Jesus chose him to be one of the Apostles, the twelve pillars of the Church.  James the lesser, should not he mistaken for James the Greater, the Son of Zebedee, who is also an Apostle.

Philip: Philip came from Bethsaida, Galilee. Jesus called him directly, whereupon he sought out Nathanael and told him of the “one about whom Moses wrote” (John 1:45).

It took some time before Philip could really know who Jesus was. When Jesus wanted to perform the miracle of feeding the 5000 men, he asked Philip where they can buy bread for the people. Saint John comments, “[Jesus] said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do” (John 6:6). Philip answered, “Two hundred days’ wages would not be enough to buy bread for each of them to have a little” (John 6:7).

John’s story is not  belittling Philip. It was important for these men who are to be the foundation of the Church to see the clear distinction between humanity’s total helplessness apart from God and the human ability to be a bearer of divine power by God’s gift.
